The Allegheny Portage railroad open on March 18th 1834. The Railroad and Canal system shortened the trip between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh substantially. We speak with park ranger Elizabeth Shope about the importance of this railroad and how it shaped travel and shipping of goods.
